What would cause a water pump to keep running?

A well pump that repeatedly loses its prime likely has underlying problems. In many cases, the problem stems from a leak in the drop pipe. Other common causes include air leaks in either the impeller or the pump casing, faulty check valves inside of the well pump, or a damaged foot valve at the bottom of your well.

Should well pump run continuously?

Your well pump should not run constantly. In fact, if you have this problem, you will quickly see your electric bill going up. If you’re noticing that it is, or if you’re having problems with it cycling on and off repeatedly, it may be a sign of a problem.

What causes a well pressure switch to stick?

What cause’s the contacts to stick. That’s usually a symptom of short cycling or an electrical problem. See the sticky posts at the top of this forum and check the air pressure in your tank, adjust as needed. Then check the voltage at the switch and the ohms, conductivity, shorts and amps if you can.

How does a well pump know when to shut off?

A well system will have at a minimum a well pump (in the photo above the well pump is submersed in the well), supply pipes, a pressure switch to tell the pump when to turn on and off, power to operate the pump, a power shut off (not shown) and a water shut off valve.

Why does my water pump keep losing prime?

Check for leaks- 90% of all pump problems occur on the suction (or Intake) side of the pump. Leaks on the pump’s intake line as well as around the shaft seal of the pump housing itself can cause your pump to lose its prime. Debris blocking the suction strainer or foot valve is the most common cause.

How long can a well pump run continuously?

If the pump has a continuous-duty motor attached, it can deliver water uninterrupted up to 20 minutes at best.

Why does my pressure tank keep turning on and off?

Short cycling of a water pump which is defined at SHORT CYCLING WATER PUMP means that the water pump or “well pump” turns on and off too rapidly or too frequently when water is being run in the building. The most-common cause of pump short-cycling is loss of air in the water pressure tank.

Is it OK to turn off water pump?

By shutting off the breaker, there should be no harm to the well pump system, provided the pump system is in good mechanical working order. But you should also shut off the power to the hot water heater. In rare cases, a broken water line can siphon water out of the hot water heater, causing damage to the unit.

How do you fix a short cycle water pump?

If there is no bypass valve for your water filter, turn off the pump and valves around the water filter, then remove the water filter cartridge and reassemble the unit. If the short cycling problem stops you probably had a clogged water filter. Replace the water filter cartridge.

Why does my water pump not shut off?

The most likely cause of a pump not shutting off is the pressure switch. It is a small box attached to the water line with electrical wires running to it from your water pump. It’s used to turn the pump on when the pressure gets low ( around 40 PSI) and turn it off when it gets high ( around 60 PSI).

What to do if your well pump won’t stop running?

BK: Well pump won’t stop running: try setting your pressure control to turn on at 20 psi and off at 40 psi. That should be achievable by most well pumps unless the pump itself is damaged. Once you have the pump operating normally in that pressure range you can try increasing the cut out, or both cut-in and cut-out gradually

What should the cut off pressure be on a water pump?

After putting it back on the pump ran up close to 40 pounds but didn’t seem to want to cut off so I adjusted the cut off pressure to 38 and it seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the great advise. I really appreciate it. Gary Slusser That’s all folks! Wherever I park the motorhome.

Why does my water pump not reach 38 psi?

Adjusting the switch proves that the switch sees the pressure and that the pump can’t build more pressure, so you still have a worn pump or leak etc.. Expect it to not be capable of reaching 38 sooner than later. I think you’re right Gary.
