Cystic fibrosis is an inherited genetic condition. It’s not contagious. To have the disease, you must inherit the faulty cystic fibrosis gene from both parents. The disease causes the mucus in your body to become thick and sticky and to build up in your organs.

Who is eligible to take Trikafta? The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Trikafta for people with CF ages 6 years and older who have at least one copy of the F508del mutation or certain mutations in the CFTR gene that are responsive based on laboratory data.
Should I date someone with cystic fibrosis?
Although you might want to date or spend time with someone else who has cystic fibrosis (CF), it could be dangerous for you to meet them in person. When you have CF, you’re at risk from different kinds of bacteria that don’t normally harm healthy people.
Can I get cystic fibrosis later in life?
As with other genetic conditions, cystic fibrosis will have been present since birth, even if it is diagnosed later in life. One in 25 people carry the faulty gene that causes cystic fibrosis. To have cystic fibrosis, both parents must be carriers of the faulty cystic fibrosis gene.
When will Trikafta be available for 6 year olds?
The FDA also approved Trikafta for children who have one of 177 other mutations that have been studied in the laboratory.
