Do you get paid for Recruit Sustainment Program?

RSP drills give you an opportunity to start getting comfortable with the terminology and protocols that are part of Guard service—and you will be getting paid for the time you spend at RSP.

What is RSP training?

Recruit Sustainment Program (RSP) is a program of the United States Army National Guard designed to introduce new recruits to the fundamentals of the U.S. Army before they leave to Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). The motto is “Paratus Preliator” (prepared warrior).

Can you be excused from drill?

Failure to call before you miss your drill weekend or immediately thereafter is considered an unexcused absence by the military. In the military, missing 4 hours of a required training equals one unexcused absence. Therefore, an entire weekend can add up to four unexcused absences.

What happens if you miss RSP drill?

Once you have completed both BCT and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) you will return to RSP for one final drill—known as Battle Handoff—before joining your regular unit and beginning work in your MOS. This leaves punishment for absence offenses to the individual states’ unit commanders.

How long can you stay in RSP?

All you have to do is repay at least 10% per year for up to ten years. Generally, your repayments start 5 years after your first withdrawal.

Can you be fired while on military leave?

Employers cannot fire an employee because of military leave. Because of the nature of active military duties, advance notice is not required, unlike civilian leave laws like FMLA or CFRA; however, the DoD highly recommends an advance notice of 30 days when it’s possible.

What is the green phase of the recruit sustainment program?

Green Phase is for warriors in the Split Training Option (STO). These warriors will return from BCT and drill with the RSP until they go to AIT. Since they have already experienced Basic Training, these warriors are groomed as junior cadre and given additional physical readiness training and leadership training.
